NITROUS OXIDE (LAUGHING GAS) SEDATION

Nitrous oxide sedation is a dental procedure performed to relieve treatment stress and anxiety. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a gas administered through a small nose piece to reduce anxiety and pain while also providing a euphoric feeling. 

Nitrous oxide sedation will make you feel very relaxed and somewhat sleepy; however, it will not put you to sleep. Patients undergoing laughing gas sedation are still aware of their surroundings and are able to respond to verbal instructions.

Can you feel pain with laughing gas?

Laughing gas is able to inhibit the feeling of pain; however, it is not very strong. The dentist may administer a local anesthetic or numbing. 

Will laughing gas make you laugh?

Laughing gas provides a euphoric feeling which can sometimes also make patients giggly. However, the gas will more commonly make patients feel relaxed and calm. 

What are alternatives to nitrous oxide?

Alternatives to nitrous oxide include general anesthesia, oral sedation medications such as a benzodiazepine.
